Sport Climbing is a discipline where the route, whether indoor or outdoor, has pre-fitted fixed bolts in the indoor wall or rock face – known as fixed or permanent anchors / protection. This type of climbing was due to be the first type of climbing to feature in the Olympics, but due to COVID we’re waiting out to watch those at the top of their game compete for the moment.
Like Traditional (or ‘Trad’) climbing, Sport climbing still requires climbers to know their way around ropes, harnesses and general climbing safety, although as the protection is already fixed on the wall, it’s generally a lot simpler to go out and do than Trad – with the added benefit that there are many indoor sport climbing gyms in the UK so you can still get some climbing in when there’s bad weather!
Andy Hunter runs the Sport Climbing Programme and is always on hand to provide advice to new and old team members. The sports climbing program is a perfect mix of both bouldering and sports climbing, all events count towards selection to inter-services places, be sure to drop him a line if you want to compete or even if you are after some advice on training or EXPED planning.
The RNRMMC along with RAFMA and AMA run a number of events through out the year that are open to all Service Personnel. For more information please read the latest DIN/RNTM found here. These are a grate opportunity to get involved in completive climbing in a friendly environment.
